Freddy's Birthday Party

When we first adopted Freddy in 2013 I instantly realized how special he truly was and decided to make a life for him that he wouldn't easily forget. I wanted to fill his life with as much adventure as his little doggie heart desired, which it turns out, is quite a lot. Over the past three years we took a 2,000 mile road trip to Michigan and back, got certified as a therapy dog team with Divine Canines, attended more dog events than I can even remember, and hosted a few dog events, too. It's been an amazing journey.

I decided Freddy's birthday this year should be bigger and better than ever, so throwing a dog birthday party seemed like the logical choice. We have no idea when his actual birthday is or how old he is, but we celebrate his birthday on December 8th, the day we brought him home. Unfortunately the weather that weekend didn't cooperate and the party had to be rescheduled to January, but he didn't mind waiting and his pup-guests didn't seem to mind either.

I have a tendency to forget to take photos and I really wanted to document this day, so I asked Krista at Ruff Adventures to come out and take photos of his party (yes, dog photographers are a thing!). I'm so glad I did because, as predicted, I took all of two photos that day! Our friends at Keep Austin Barking came out and took some photos, too!

Anyway, I'll stop yammering now and get on to what y'all really came here to see, which are the photos! Below are just a few photos from that day, to view the entire gallery click here. You can also search the hashtag #FreddyPicklesBirthday on Instagram. A few of you asked me to share my pupcake recipe, it'll be at the end of this post.

Thank you all for following along with us on our little journey, it's been more rewarding and fun than I ever imagined and I am forever grateful to all the friends we've made along the way.

Carrot Sweet Potato Pupcakes

3 cups dog-friendly flour of your choice (I used barley flour)

2 cups shredded carrots (I ran them through the food processor)

1 sweet potato, cooked and peeled

3 eggs

1/2 cup unsweetened applesauce

Mix all ingredients and spoon into cupcake liners. The dough is thick! Bake at 350 degrees for 20-25 minutes. Since there's no leavening agent they won't rise much, if at all. The "icing" is mashed sweet potato that I piped with a piping bag, then I topped it with a bone. This recipe makes a little over two dozen mini pupcakes.
